a cocktail for Sharp Objects
Sharp Objects (2018) is the HBO mini series adaptation of the book by Gillian Flynn. It’s a fantastic portrayal with a star-studded cast including Amy Adams as Camille, Patricia Clarkson as Adora, Eliza Scanlen as Amma, Sophia Lillis of the 2017 It remake, Sydney Sweeney of Eurphoria and more familiar faces!
The story follows journalist Camille, who is recently out of a psychiatric care facility, as she returns to her small home town of Wind Gap, Missouri to chase the stories of one missing girl and another that was murdered.
Wind Gap is full of ridiculous — usually intoxicated — characters. The four main women, Adora, Camille, Amma, and Jackie, are no exception. Adora Crellin is the matriarch of the Preaker/Crellin family; mother to Camille, Amma, and their late sister, Marian. Jackie O’neal is like a godmother to Camille, as she and Adora were long-time friends… until they weren’t.
Sharp Objects dives into the cycle of abuse that can occur when mental illness goes unchecked, abusers have money, power, and influence, and those around choose to turn a blind eye despite speculating and gossiping.
Gossip and alcohol are main staples in Wind Gapian life. From the beginning, we are met with the alcoholism that flows through this town and it’s people — young and old. Camille pours vodka into a water bottle to carry through each day. When she is pretty unwelcomely greeted by her mother, Adora has an amaretto sour. Jackie “didn’t really see” Camille at the search for missing Natalie Keene because of her sweet tea “with a kick”. There are many instances of drunken Amma. Even a pregnant woman implies she drinks and drives while taking Camille to a girls night get together. So it only felt right to make a cocktail inspired by the town and women who could probably drink me under a table!
As mentioned, the first time Camille encounters her mother figures they are with drink in hand. There’s also foreshadowing in the silky southern way Adora pronounces “amaretto”. To represent the women of Sharp Objects, here is a double spiked sour that combines elements of an amaretto sour and godmother cocktail.
YOU’LL NEED:
~ 1 oz amaretto
~ 1 oz Absolut vodka
~ 1 oz lemon juice
~ 1 oz simple syrup
~ crushed ice
~ cockail shaker
~ glass
(optional splash of tonic water)
TO MAKE:
- combine syrup, amaretto, Absolut, lemon juice, & 2 ice cubes in shaker
- shake for 10–15secs to combine
- pour over ice in glass (top with splash of tonic water if using)
- ENJOY!!!!!!
