The Massacre Froze

The Slumber Party Massacre (1982) is the arguably feminist cult classic directed by Amy Holden Jones and written by Rita Mae Brown that kicked off the first — if only — all women and femme headed slasher franchise! The film was originally written as satire of the slasher genre but was shot as a traditional horror film instead (a choice that certainly adds to the campiness).

Four friends, Trish, Jackie, Diane and Kim have a slumber party on the same day deranged serial killer, Russ Thorn, escapes prison. The wild thing about Thorn is that his weapon of choice is a power drill; effectively making him the “Driller Killer” (not to be confused with The Driller Killer from 1979). Unbeknownst to the girls, the slashing will soon make its way to their slumber party and their only hope may be the neighbor they refused to invite over, Valerie, and her sister, Courtney who have been watching the party from their home.

The 2021 remake of the first franchise installment, Slumber Party Massacre, continues the legacy of being women headed with Danishka Esterhazy (Level 16 and The Banana Splits Movie) directing and Suzanne Keilly as writer! The film sticks to a similar themes as the orignal by inverting many horror troupes and taking a more empowerment based approach to addressing the idea of women and femmes essentially having to doom-prepare to get through any given day; though the empowerment may be ill faithed for some. This film pays great homage to the first two Slumber Party Massacre movies while being unique and humorously meta.

In 1993, Russ Thorn stalks and kills 3 of the 4 young women having a slumber party in the woods. The sole survivor, Trish, thought she killed him, but rumors still swirled that he was alive and still killing in those woods. 20-ish years later, Dana Deveraux; Trish Deveraux’s daughter, is taking a girls trip with friends and happens to break down in the very town her mother had to fight to get out of alive. The girls may have to do the exact same thing.

In both films, the girls participate in pretty normal slumber party activities (at least at first) like smoking some “maui wowie 100% seedless prime bud” and making blended drinks in the ‘82 one; or drinking “Cooler — the worst vodka cooler ever made” as seen in ‘21 and, of course, eating pizza!!!

The drink Jackie is making in ‘82 seemed to have strawberries and wine or vodka — so I used both! As mentioned, “Cooler” is refrenced in the podcast Dana is listening to at the begining of ’21. It’s a trendy drink; “the worst vodka cooler invented”, that prompts the girls to bring along a trendy drink of their time. I will die on the hill that White Claw is being parodied here and the current #WhiteClawSZN on twitter only confirmed that for me; which is why it’s included in this drink!

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 raspberry OR strawberry White Claw
  • 1/2 c. rose wine
  • 2 oz vodka (original or strawberry)
  • 1/2–1 oz grenadine
  • 1 c. frozen strawberries
  • 1 c. ice
  • blender

TO MAKE:

  • add all ingredients to blender
  • blend until smooth
  • Serve with pizza & ENJOY!
